WARIA STREETS

The struggle of transgender women in Yogyakarta, Indonesia for economic equality and opportunity.

WARIA STREETS is a 13-minute observational documentary featuring Tamara, a 24-year-old artist and Waria living in the city of Yogyakarta in Central Java, Indonesia’s most populous island.

Transgender women in Indonesia are known as Waria, which blends together two Indonesian words: wanita (“woman”) and pria (“man”). Indonesia is home to the largest Muslim population in the world and has one of the most open transgender communities in Asia.

As shown in Waria Streets, however, they are far from fully accepted.
