40 Acres

FORTY ACRES is a multi-platform exploration of Black American farmers and herbalists and their changing relationship to the land.

FORTY ACRES tells the story of many Black American farmers, land stewards and herbalists, and their evolving relationship to the land. For some Black people, the land went from being a space of forced manual labor to an opportunity for freedom through land ownership. The older generation has stories of survival and discrimination, while the young Black, LGBTQIA+ people are just starting to build their own safe places rooted in connecting with the land. FORTY ACRES focuses on a deeper understanding of what land means to us, what forces hinder land ownership, and what is the state of Black farmers and their fight to stay afloat in the midst of climate change.
